Just a general list of character possibilities that would be good to have... But don't let it stop you if you want to do something else.
Daimyo. The forum is set in an age of political upheaval and civil war. Some ambitious, scheming, and warring feudal lords would be good to have.
Ji-samurai/kokujin. Minor, but independant, rural lords.
Imperial family. Though possessing little political power, the Emperor and his family are still of great symbolic/religious importance.
13th Shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate. Again, though possessing little actual power, the shogun was still an important symbol during this time.
Vassals/retainers. Where would a ruler be without advisers, servants, samurai, and ashigaru?
Clergy. Buddhist monks, nuns, and sōhei, Shinto priests and shrine maidens (miko), yamabushi, or even a Christian missionary.
Onmyōji. A special class of occultists and mystics, often in the service of the Imperial family or a daimyo.
Ikkō-ikki leaders/members. Militant, loosely organized mobs of commoners, minor lords, and monks who have taken up arms against the ruling samurai class.
Rōnin. Masterless samurai. It should be noted that the shame and stigma of the rōnin status was largely a product of the later Edo Period's rigid class system.
Ninja. Spies, assassins, saboteurs, mercenaries, criminals, etc. The ninja can play many roles, whether in the employ of a daimyo, privately contracted, or simply working on their own. The most prominent, and feared, ninja clans come from Koga and Iga.
Mercenaries/Criminals. Pretty self-explanatory. Just general fighters or thugs, often with peasant roots, that have taken up arms in order to profit from the chaotic times. Some have goals and want to rise up in the world, but many others are just out to get whatever they can.
Yōkai. In these chaotic times many yōkai are acting with impunity. Some particularly ambitious ones are seeking to conquer human lands.
Nanban. The first Europeans to have contact with Japan (one or two Westerners could be interesting).
