"Well, that's good, in a way. That you don't know anyone personally who was murdered by this yōkai ninja, I mean." He stared at the other's back, listening to him speak. "May I ask why you seek him?" This was beyond mere curiosity. If he could, Kazuki wished to help this man.
(Just throwin' this out there for potential future posts...
Why not have Kazuki attempt to contact his former master? His master, who is dead, obviously knew the ninja dude (or at least more about him than Denmaru knows). And the master himself could answer questions, assuming his spirit is willing to do so.)

(A good idea, but I believe there should be something to lead up to that. Mwahaha)
"Well, that is to say-" Denmaru started, trying to find some suitable words to explain it without having to go into the whole 'story of my life' explanation. He wasn't very fond of sharing that. However, someone cut him off before he could further murmur his awkward rambling.
"Because he's a traitor!" The voice rung. Denmaru's eyes looked to the side, away from Kazuki and to the form coming at him. Denmaru took a step back, quickly drawing his blade. A rather thick blade came down on him and Denmaru blocked, slanting his sword and forcing the other's the slide off from the shear force. But even then he had trouble taking the raw strength, his waraji sliding a bit in the dirt and almost falling into the river.
Sparks were cast from the two blades and illuminated Denmaru's face in a bout of orange- as well as his attacker. A man with cropped hair and black eyes. He was rather big, having large muscles and a very heavy weapon. In that flash of light, that was all that could be seen before the darkness overwhelmed them once again.
Denmaru saw the light of the stars glint off the blade as it was quickly risen over the assailant’s head. Denmaru’s brown eyes held a steady gaze, his facial expression a deadly seriousness, yet unnervingly calm. He could hear his heart beating quicker than usual, the blood rushing through his veins with an intoxicating dose of adrenaline. His eyes reflected the blade that intended to cut him in half, as it came down and the sharp blade gave a glint of light in the darkness. Denmaru used his legs to jump out of the way, his form rolling across the river bank. He used his hand to propel himself into the air, landing on his legs and holding his sword ready.
“I do not wish to fight you.” Denmaru said, a hint of desperation in his voice. The fact that this battle would only end in death was what he feared. He did not want to kill another former classmate, to take another life.
“You murdered our teacher and you intend to murder the last connection of him too- you must cut through me first before you kill anyone else!” the other exclaimed.
Denmaru knew it was all a misunderstanding, that they knew nothing of the truth. However, he felt that even if he told this man the truth, or any of the others, they would appoint it a lie and further hate him. They believed in their teacher- and, once, Denmaru did too. But all respect of his teacher had gone long ago that night he was forced to kill him. “You can choose what you believe, but that does not mean I want to kill you.”

"Hmm?" Kazuki turned his head to look at the approaching man. He silently watched as Denmaru and the strangers briefly crossed blades before parting. "Come now." Kazuki stepped between the two men without drawing his own sword. Echoing Denmaru's thoughts, he said, "Surely this is a misunderstanding. This night doesn't have to end in bloodshed..." He had seen men going to great lengths to avenge their fallen master, but he hoped this one would realize he was outnumbered and just walk away.

Denmaru blinked when Kazuki stood in front of him. He leaned to the side to look over his shoulder, brown eyes gazing at the brute man beyond. He pointed his large weapon at Kazuki. “You protect a man born of blood! Stand aside or you too shall die!” he said in a deep and dire voice, his eyes almost seemed black from where Denmaru stood. All his classmates, driven to such lengths just to exterminate him. They lost their master to someone who they thought to be a murderer. Of course they were upset. Denmaru closed his eyes for a moment, standing there. He had already killed few of his former classmates, their blood forever stained his hands, even if he could not see the red that dyed his skin. He did not wish to end yet another life.

Kazuki did not budge even as the other man threatened him, but he kept himself loose, ready to react if the man attacked. "Why should I stand idle while you cut down another man in cold blood without offering any proof of these accusations?" He felt himself to be in a precarious position, defending a potential murderer, but he sensed no malice in Denmaru. "Besides, this won't bring back your master. Is there not enough bloodshed in this world already? Go in peace and let your master's memory rest."
(Sorry for the delay in replying.)

(Sorry for taking forreevveerrr. School is beating me with a stick and digging a ditch for me to jump into.)
"Our master's peace will never be restored until his murderer has been cleaved from this world!" The man shouted. He lifted his blade up and used all his strength to bring it down on Kazuki.

(It's all right.)
Kazuki regretted having to use force, but it seemed the man was done talking. Reacting as soon as the other man raised his sword to attack, Kazuki quickly took a step forward, nimbly turning his body and side-stepping the sword. As he did this, he also brought his arm up over the other man's arms, aiming a knifehand strike at the other man's throat with the intent of knocking him to the ground. Kazuki did not put much force behind the strike, content to let the other man's forward attacking momentum do most of the work.
(So, if the attack lands, the dude is kinda clotheslining himself... Heh. It's something like this.)

Denmaru couldn’t believe what he saw! Mostly because he thought Kazuki to be just some average person. And a rather illogical one to be sleeping on the river at night in a rather destroyed ferry boat. But it seemed there was much more to him. He watched as the large oaf hit the ground with a horrid thud. The large brute take down by a simple blow. Denmaru sheathed his sword, the soft sound of the blade sliding on the sheath briefly disturbing the night’s embrace with it’s low chime. He lightly brushed off his cloths, the dirt falling away from the cloth.
The man groaned, clutching at his throat- which must have hurt from that good momentum he had going. He’d likely have a nasty bruise there. But at least he was alive… The only problem with that, he would most definitely come after Denmaru again. Just like many of his other classmates. Denmaru didn’t really want to get too close to the enraged man.
“Thank you for your help.” Denmaru said simply. Not bothering to go as far as to adding ‘but it wasn’t needed’. Sure, Denmaru didn’t like other people getting involved. It only made the mess much, much worse. But he was also thankful for the help in general. Who knew what could have happened if the fight had gone on further.

Reaching down, Kazuki picked up the man's sword and said to him, "My apologies for that. Though I offer my condolences for your fallen master, I have no desire to die for the sake of your revenge." Tossing the sword into the river, he turned to Denmaru, "It seems you were right, this night has become less pleasant after all. We should go, before he recovers. Hopefully he does not have allies lurking about."

Denmaru’s brown eyes watched blankly as the blade sunk into the dark waters that cruelly continued to sweep by. He averted his gaze as the weapon was no longer to be seen, it’s heavy metal resting at the bottom of the river unable to be silhouetted by the moonlight. He glanced at Kazuki as he spoke to him. Denmaru supposed it was rude not to have told Kazuki about this little problem with his classmates- considering fights between him and them occurred often.
He nodded in agreement that they should leave the area. “That would be for the best.” he replied.

Slinging his rutsack over his shoulder, Kazuki set out along the river bank at a brisk pace. He assumed that if their attacker had friends that they would have shown themselves when he was knocked down. Nonetheless, Kazuki was on his guard. "Forgive me for prying," He said to Denmaru, "But is there any truth to that man's accusations? Is there a connection between your former master and the man you seek?" He was curious more than anything, and not altogether upset at Denmaru for being attacked.

Denmaru followed just behind Kazuki. He was deep in thought himself, a hand to his neck as he tried putting together the peices that had yet to form a picture. He had so little information was the problem. Perhaps he was going about it wrong. Or there was the possibility he just wasn't following the right trail, considering how light and faded the one he followed was already. He had no new leads, and had no luck gathering new information.
He snapped out of his thoughts when Kazuki spoke to him. Ah, there was the golden question. He had no reason to hide much from this person. Kazuki hadn't been in their class, and he didn't look old enough to have been in any earlier classes as a student. But he still had to be careful.
"Yes, there is much truth in his words... But not all of it is correct." Denmaru slowed his pace a little, looking over his shoulder. He didn't see the man following. However so, he was still cautious of another attack. "I indeed killed my Master. But only for the sake of my life and the life of the other students. I am shrouded in darkness and hope to find truth with this yokai- if I am ever so succesful as to find him on my journey."
Denmaru saw Mei a few feet behind, running up to catch up to them. Her fluffy fur ruffled from the resistance of the air. She yipped at them and quickly caught up to them, though remained near Denmaru. He gave a soft smile and paused in walking, picking her up from the ground.
"I hope that answers your query." Denmaru said, obviously not wishing to go into more detail for his answer.

'It still doesn't explain the connection between his master and the yōkai he's seeking,' Kazuki thought to himself, 'And raises the question of why the students needed protection from their master...' Without jumping to conclusions, he wished to learn the full story. But this was not the time or place for a discussion, and Denmaru seemed hesitant to share more. Kazuki couldn't really blame him for that. "Do you know the area?" He asked, switching the subject. "It might be a good idea to find a place to lay low, at least until morning."
(Heh. I'm kinda tired. I hope the reply is all right.)
