Female
Occupation/Class:
Assassin/Mercenary/Serial killer, with eta roots.

Asexual
Physical Description:
One of Ryoko's most distinguishing and unsettling physical features are her eyes, which are inexplicably red in color. Ryoko herself likes to think that she inherited them from a distant yōkai ancestor, but there is no definite proof of this statement. Her silken black hair flows down past her knees. Her shorter bangs are parted and hang down the sides of her face. In her hair, she wears a large, vaguely butterfly shaped dark purple bow and a thin red ribbon.
She is petite, standing a little over five feet. She is fairly attractive, with the slender curves of a women and smooth, unblemished skin. However, her seemingly delicate features are often contorted with terrifying cruelty or frenzied hysteria.
She wears a short kimono with detached sleeves, which have a wave pattern on them. It is mostly red, yellow at the tips. Her obi is dark pink in color, with a floral design. She wears white tabi and dark red geta on her feet.
Personality Description:
To put it bluntly, Ryoko is mentally ill. She lacks any kind of conscience and is pathologically incapable of experiencing emotions such as empathy or remorse. Ryoko is sometimes able to mimic these emotions, usually for deceptive purposes, but the facade never lasts long. She is indifferent to praise or criticism, and pays no heed to social norms. She neither enjoys nor desires close relationships of any kind.
Ryoko seems to have little interest in most activities, except for violence and suffering. Highly sadistic, she takes great pleasure in torture, mutilation, and dismemberment. Her motives are not sexual in nature, as in some serial killers. At some point she starting believing that, if she kills enough people, she will be reborn as a goddess of death, a Shinigami. To that end, she is fascinated with the nature of pain, death, and the human body. Beyond this, she kills for the sheer joy of it and to experience the addicting power-mad rush she gets from inducing pain and terror in her victims.
Despite her disturbed mental state, Ryoko is fairly intelligent. She has a somewhat distorted sense of the potential consequences of her actions, and is sometimes quite reckless, but is aware enough to realize swinging her sword around in certain areas is a good way for her to lose her own head. She does make an effort to control her psychotic impulses in such areas, however, she's not always successful...
Likes/Dislikes:

History:
Takahashi Saburo, Ryoko's grandfather, was once a samurai. He was the vassal of a minor daimyo in Shimotsuke, Lord Kinjo. However, he disgraced himself by taking part in a failed attempt to assassinate his lord and usurp his power. For this act of treason, Saburo was ordered to commit seppuku. He did not comply, however, and was forcibly executed.
Kinjo then stripped his family of their rank and confiscated all of their property. So shamed, Goro, Saburo's son, was made a pariah. He was not a warrior, like his father, and the only work he could find was as an undertaker and embalmer, which reduced him to the eta caste.
Ryoko was born in an isolated, nameless hamlet in which the eta of Kinjo's domain lived. She was born to Goro and Yumi, a young eta women. Ryoko's strange colored eyes frightened the others, and she soon became an outcast even among outcasts. Her parents, however, still loved and cared for her like a normal child.
With her father's work as an embalmer, she was exposed to the concept of death from a very young age and quickly became fascinated with his work. At first, Goro thought nothing of it, that his child just wanted to follow in her father's footsteps. He was wrong.
Goro soon became concerned when his embalming implements began to disappear and mutilated animal corpses started appearing behind the family's hut. When he asked Ryoko if she knew anything about these occurrences, she admitted to stealing his fathers implements and experimenting on the animals. Ryoko was twelve at the time, and her parents soon came to realize something was not right with their daughter.
About a year later another mutilated corpse turned up. This time it is was a human, that of Jiro, who was a sickly old eta. There was no need for her parents to question Ryoko, because she found standing over the body, covered in the old man's blood and holding a stolen dagger. She showed no remorse, and only laughed at the cries of horror from her parents and the other residents.
Believing the young girl was possessed by an evil spirit, she was driven out of the hamlet. For some time Ryoko wandered. She survived by propositioning herself to both men and women. Once the person had fallen asleep, Ryoko smothered them, stealing their clothing and personal effects afterward and selling them. She moved constantly so that no one could connect her, just a nameless traveler, to her victims, who were mostly down and out rōnin anyway.
Occasionally she would keep something, which is the method she used to acquire her weapons and clothing. Ryoko was about sixteen when she stole her nodachi from some traveling samurai snuck up on and bludgeoned to death with a rock. She desired how to use it properly, for if she became a warrior of sorts she could enter battles and kill unfettered. She saved up the money from selling her victims objects and sought a martial arts school that would accept her. She found a small school in Izumo that was relatively unknown. Posing as the daughter of a rōnin, the master of the poor school asked few questions when presented with the sizable amount of money she had saved up.
For several months she held off her urge to kill people, the longest she had gone since starting, limiting her sadistic tendencies to animals when out of her master's sight. Her master was certainly suspicious of her, but said nothing as long her payments continued. It was only a matter of time before she lost control, and she eventually lead a fellow student who had a crush on her to a secluded area. She cut him down, making her first kill with her sword. She had mastered much of the basics of swordplay, and this was enough for now she told herself. After carving him up with her tantō, she left the student's body where it was and never returned to the school.
For the next several years she has wandered across Japan, performing mercenary and assassin work. Perhaps in the past no one would hire a female, but in these troubled times anyone with a weapon could find work with it. Honing her skills on the battlefield itself, she has built up a notorious reputation for her brutality, which often far in excess of the needs of the job she's been hired to do.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
(Strengths):
Ryoko is surprisingly strong for her size, possessing physical strength on par with a male many times her size. This allows her to effectively wield a nodachi. She also seems to have a natural knack for the weapon, as her strokes are unusually quick and precise considering the sword's size.
She is also quick and agile, due to her small size. She is highly cunning, fairly intelligent, and has much knowledge about human anatomy.
(Weaknesses):
While she may be quick and strong, she has a small build and cannot take as much physical punishment as she can dish out. With no formal training beyond the basics, her fighting style is very rough and unpolished, which could be a weakness against a more disciplined fighter.
She is largely illiterate, only being able write her own name, and has no mind for numbers beyond basic arithmetic.
Most people would also see her lack of remorse and empathy a fault, as well as her distorted sense of the potential consequences of her actions.
Weapons/Armor:
A masterwork nodachi, with a blade length of 48in (~122cm) and 17in (~43cm) hilt. The hilt, custom fitted to the tang, is wrapped in same kawa (ray skin), over which is wrapped black tsuka-ito (braided silk cords). It's steel tsuba is oval in shape, and black in color.
Its decorated saya is carved from hinoki wood. Attached to it is a red cord, which Ryoko uses to carry the sword across her back or over her shoulder.
She also keeps a regular tantō, in a red saya thrust through her obijime.
Magic:
N/A
Other:
Hmm... Well, she's made plenty of enemies over the years, from people seeking revenge to employers she's turned on after getting bored.
