As some of you may know, Japanese mythology is home to a great variety of supernatural beings, collectively known as "yōkai" (or sometimes "mononoke"). The term is often translated into English as "demon", although this is somewhat misleading, for not all yōkai are malevolent. Some certainly are, but others are simply mischievous or even benign. Nor are all yōkai even associated with "hell" or the "underworld". They encompass a wide variety of beings, of both terrestrial and otherworldly origins, and can include any living, non-human monster or supernatural creature other than kami (gods) or yurei (ghosts).
For more detail on specific examples of yōkai, refer here. Members wishing to play a yōkai are not limited to pre-existing kinds, however, and are welcome to invent their own species, if they so desire (provided it fits with forum's theme).
